Conclusion
The common wealth games and
sport city has had a massive sporting impact on communities and the people of
Manchester this has led to a rapid increase in the people participating in
sport this has led to encouraging many people to participate in sport due to
having the facilities locally. This is also the reason for winning the amount
of medals people have won in sport in events such as the Olympic and Paralympic
games. The value of sport in the UK has increased due to having the facilities
and major events held by the UK. This has a positive impact on all people due
to having more people wanting to participate in sport due to knowing that they
have the facilities to participate. This also has a positive impact in other
way such as people having more job opportunities locally and this is also
positive to the people that watch sport because they can go spectate in grounds
that are local to them without travelling as much as they should have had to
do.
Legacy of the 2002 Cmmonwealth games
The legacy of the 2002
commonwealth games was the reason for the development of sport city which is in
Manchester, this also lead to making a ground for football which is used by
Manchester city football club. Sport city also features the National Squash
centre, Manchester Velodrome and the tennis centre as well as the state of the
art gymnasium. This meant that it had a positive impact on the community due to
the standards of Manchester rising and the community being a much better place
with good opportunities. Due to the common wealth games Manchester has become a
much sportier place due to having arising opportunities. Sport city is
developed to be a venue for many sporting events. This also had a positive
impact on the community due to new employment being needed and many other
opportunities for the locals.
The impact sport city has had on local employment has been very positive due to more job opportunities arising and due to the fact that the common wealth games was set in Manchester it has led to winning Olympic medals in cycling and cycling has become one of the most popular sports, if the common wealth games was not set in Manchester. Manchester wouldn’t have been this successful in sports due to having no facilities to train in and people not having as much of a interest in sport whereas due to the cycling areas around Manchester (saddle worth) it has led to Manchester having some of the best cyclist this also explains why cycling is a really popular sport according to blog post 2.
Due to having sport city Manchester schools are also very fortunate due to them being able to use grounds for events they hold such as sports days etc. they can use the tracks and field to do track and field events which is much more enjoyable for children due to them being able to experience doing events on a track where famous athletes train which is good encouragement for children.

The Value of Sport in the UK (Economic Impact)
In
2008 21.4 billion pounds was the rate of sport related expenditure this
included clothing, footwear, gambling sport spectating etc. as you can see on
the pie chart above there was only £535000000 out of the 21.4 billion spent on
people who are participating in sport which is a very small amount compared to
the other components that are spent more on this shows how there are more
people buying sport related clothing but less people participating in sport
which shows people wear sport related clothing for everyday wear and leisure
wear not necessarily for sports. The amount that is spent on sport equipment is
£1626400000 this is a large amount which shows a lot of people use sport
equipment for sport activities this being a large amount is a positive aspect
due to the fact that a lot of people play sports in their own leisure time or
are in need of sport equipment which speaks for it self.
Consumer
spending decreased in 2002-2004 and in 2004-2005 the same happened but there’s
was a rapid incline in the amount of consumer percentage
Participation rates in sport.
Below is the graph for the sport being participated in 4 weeks for at least 30 minutes this survey was done by sport England. Swimming is the most participated sport due to having approximately 22.00% of a participation rate in 4 weeks which is the most on the graph this can be due to men and women of all ages being allowed to swim. Swimming can be done by all people and ranges from a very young age to a very old age and this is not a sport that has to be done with a team or groups this is a antisocial sport and there is no correct speed or lengths you just do it how you want and how much you want. Whereas nationally football would be thought to be the most popular and participated sport which it isn’t this may be due to not having enough players, facilities, coaches etc. but the plus side of football would be that it is more of a social sport where you can make teams with your friends and do something as a group. 350 million days of football were done in a year by 18 and over aged people. Whereas, 650 million days of swimming were done in a year the number of swimming days is much bigger due to it being an indoor sport which is good for the health and can be done by all ages all around the year. 5 aside football centres also went up by 20% and it is reckoned the 150 more are to open this will increase football participation rates by masses.
Cycling is a much popular sport due to it being ranked 4thon the graph this is due to all ages being able to ride a bike and it being a good way to stay in shape this is a recommended exercise for all ages especially the older generation due to it being enjoyable and healthy. In 2008 8.8% of households bought a new bike this is also a positive impact of sport retail shops tend to make a lot of cycling due to it being a good strategy to reduce obesity.
Above is a
graph from the sports that are participated in by students from my class this a
big participation rate in football due to the class having a bigger interest in
sport and most of the class being young boys which explains why the majority
did football which is a biased point of view. Then again cycling also had quite
a lot of participants in the last month this is due to the interest of students
in my class this could never be compared as the majority of people from all
ages due to people in my class having similar hobbies and interests. All the
rest had approx. similar amount of people participating this was due to
personal hobbies and things that interested individuals.
Participation rates also increase other aspects of sport. Such as for participating in certain sports equipment and kit would be needed this will increase the amount sport retail make this will also increase sport med due to more sport injuries increasing due to participation this will also increase sport medication rates. If participation rates increase sport facilities would be needed to improve and developed so that there are more and sport coaches would need to be hired so that participants professionalise In sports and the other aspects such as sport gambling, sport spectating and sport tourism would also increase due to having more things to bet on and more opportunities to spectate and travel to spectate other games. this will increase the amount of talent and there would be more of a selection to choose from when finding talent and the level of competition will increase.
The scale and economic importance of sport in the UK
In this blog
I am going to discuss how the scale and economic importance of sport in the UK.
In order to evaluate the economic importance in sport we need to understand the
meaning of ‘scale’ I think the meaning of scale is how big something is for
example the amount of people that are going to the Olympics or the number of
sport clubs /teams there are in the United Kingdom. The amount of participants
in a certain sport can also be a good example of a scale.
Knowing the meaning of economic importance is also important to find out why it’s important in the UK. Economic importance means the social and financial benefit or impact it has on sport. Some people would call economic importance a hobby, pass time, exercise, jobs, entertainment, and way of life, financial impact and tourism these are all financial and social benefits of sport which most people do or take part in.
There are many providers in sport in the UK some are public providers which are facilities and events open to everyone these are usually supplied by the council or organisations, whereas private providers would be businessmen these would be places for people who are willing to pay a certain amount of money for them to use the facilities supplies, where as voluntary providers are people who give up their own free time to coach or help people out and they have no financial benefit.
The sport industry is a very complex industry that has many components in it such as sport medicine, sport facilities, sport retail, sport coaching, sport related gambling, sport tourism, sport development, facility provision, sport spectating, health and fitness these are all important aspects of the sport industry and each component is reliant on one and another these are known as the interrelationships. From three sectors there are a wide range of organisations involved in the provision of sport and services in the UK.
There are some measures that can be taken and used such as consumer spending can be measured in sport to show the importance of sport in the UK, the participation rate can also so be taken in to account to see the scale in the industry, regeneration tool can help by providing evidence of how is has a positive effect on the environment and how sport has a economic and social benefit to society. Regenerating an area helps people appreciate the area they live in and it improves the social, economic, political and environmental benefits. Such as in 2008 sport equipment reached £1.64 billion this shows the importance of sport and now the importance has increased the economic value would have also increased.
